Revised List for The Elect of Magnus: Long Fangs and Wolf Guard theme

You can skip to the list or read my rambling overview, or both. This thing is for 2,000 points. It aims to shoot you very much, followed by charging mutated champions, very much, in your face until you are dead.

I wanted something that was competitive, fun, and reflected the nature of the army. After my lackluster results at TSHFT, I needed something that hit harder in both shooting and assaults. I hate comp points for tournaments but still wanted some fluff in this list, so the three main squads all have 9 models in them. I tried to do that for the scouts but didn’t have the points.

The plan is lots of can opening type shooting, while I rush three rhinos together at an objective (mindful of emergency exits for destroyed results). They can split up midgame if need be. The Rhinos are full of scoring and killing Wolf Guard and Grey Hunters. I will have one shooty razorback with a scoring Wolf Guard pilot who can camp objectives near my board edge. I have two spammy Long Fangs units each with 4 missile launchers, 1 lascannon, and an extra WG bullet catcher. Now the really fun unit will be based on a crazy, absurd “tactica” I wrote up about a year ago. This half baked, balls out “idea” features 5 relentless Multi-meltas drop podding down and blowing shit up, led by a counts as Logan and accompanied by a power sword wielding maniac.  A  few sneaky mutant scouts can outflank a Powerfist and melta. Two TWC will be a nice reserve unit although they are flimsy to shooting.

I really can’t wait to try this thing out. I miss my cavalry but I feel confident that this should win some games. It can kill noobs for sure, but it needs testing. I included an empty drop pod in case I need to reserve my Logan managed, multi-targeting, mobile, mutated multi-meltas unit, and I can potentially use it to block movement or be a nuisance contesting an objective.

Quick note about Logan+Long Fangs+Drop Pod. If you look at Logan’s rule; it has to be done at the beginning of the turn (as in GAME turn).

“Such is his skill at command that you may choose one of the following special rules at the beginning of each turn: Fearless, Tank Hunters, Relentless, Preferred Enemy. Logan and any unit he is with have that rule for the duration of that player turn.”

Just like you can’t do psychic powers when you’re off the table, since Logan starts in reserve, you can’t do these powers (or, at least thats how I read it).

In any event, I think its a waste of long fangs to do that. Better to have Logan in a missile unit and give them tank hunters for S9 missiles or S10 lascannon as is your case.

Also, with all those Wolf Guard units, I think you should shave points here and there (drop pods) and upgrade the Wolf Guard Long Fang babysitters to have Termy armor and CMLs for more survivability and also for more Missiles!

It specifically says player turn…. as you quoted…

You raise a good question, and I will need to get it resolved before I play this…. oh look what I just found:

      Q. Can Logan Grimnar benefit from his The High
King special rule the turn he arrives from
Reserves? And can Logan use The High King
special rule at the beginning of the opponents
      turn?
      A. Yes and yes.

Thanks for scaring the shit out of me! 😉

As for cyclones, they are expensive and might be better for walking wolfguard. Since I assume my Long fangs will be targets I gave them some ablative wounds while trying to keep the cost low.

This list looks very fun- I love all of the wolfguard just jumping out into different squads. Fantastic!

As far as the multimeltas in a drop pod, yeah, you’ll have to choose your targets carefully. You may end up using them as a very deadly distraction, dropping in where they are relatively out of harms way but still might cause a lot of harm with those Str 8 AP 1 shots even if they aren’t in melta range.

Thanks a lot for your comments!

The great thing about the massed multi-meltas is that they can fry elite infantry as well as vehicles. Bikes, Terminators, Meganobz, MCs, or regular MEQ are threatened. 5 Multi-melta shots with an effective 30″ range (move and shoot) should kill 3 or more a turn reliably. “Logan” can always split off to join an assault or lead missile launcher fangs depending on the game.

Stay tuned for more pictures. I have been working hard on converting up more Long fangs. I am using some OOP rogue trader era chaos marines + green stuff and plastic horror bits for a lot of them.

Oh, and almost forgot: modeling and painting job=drool 🙂

  4. Hey, I like your models, they look Amazing!!! I like the list, but it kind of feels all over the place. While it completely takes full advantage of the Wolf Guard (I love the pilot idea, so smart)it doesn’t give you as much Target priority as to make your opponent hesitate to kill the Logan Bomb.

The Logan Bomb gives space wolf players the ability to drop a very choppy and shooty unit but at the same time make the opponent want to take care of the rest of the opponents army. The Logan Bomb is about giving your opponent multiple different options, all of them leaving him vulnerable to attack.

In this list I feel that the Logan Bomb is vital for the army to work, it shouldn’t be. The Logan Bomb is suppose to drop in, bag two tanks and cause as much havoc as possible before going down, it cant be the ace in the hole (though it will end up being one some games).

Here is how I think the Logan Bomb works best, check it out.

I have been strongly considering a single walking CML/CF led wolf guard squad, but I don’t want to spam them. I converted up one CML/CF guy and I will probably start painting him tonight.

I do want to include some cav in my next list, but it it is so hard to decide. I might even go radical and do 3 Iron priests with cyberwolves, + 3 individual TW guys with some decent equipment.

I’ve been thinking about Arjac too, partly because of Purgatus’s post on YTTH.

Thanks for the comments, I have a lot to digest.
